A practice in development
How to Spend a Life began with a question: how much of a life should we try to design, and how much do we need to learn to inhabit?
I’m currently studying life design, coaching and positive psychology, alongside a longstanding exploration of Stoic, Taoist and Buddhist philosophy.
The intention is to turn these ideas into a practical one-to-one offering for people who are thinking seriously about how they want to spend the next part of their lives.
It may be particularly useful at moments of transition: when work no longer fits, priorities are changing, an old definition of success has stopped making sense, or life has introduced circumstances that cannot simply be redesigned away.
The work will sit around two questions:
What can be designed?
The choices, structures, relationships, work, priorities, environments and uses of time that remain available to us.
What needs to be inhabited?
The uncertainty, limitations, changes and realities that cannot be solved simply by making a better plan.
The aim is not to design a perfect life.
It is to become more deliberate about what we can shape, and more skilful at living with what we cannot.
The practice will begin in 2027.
